Dawkins Greenhouse

  • Group Name: Dawkins Greenhouse
  • Project Name: Dawkins Greenhouse
  • Type of Venture: Modified Agriculture
  • Sponsors:
  • Start Date: May 2015

Description of Project:

Description of Venture: The project will operate as an Incubator for training prospective Greenhouse owners in the techniques of greenhouse farming and principles of business. The existing project facility consists of a mini-water dam which was made possible through the generosity of JAMALCO which donated the land, funding from the GEF Small Grants Program, the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica and the Jamaica Bauxite Institute. Mocho is a farming community where most adults eke out a living on small plots of land. Presently farmers sell their produce to higglers (middlemen) at rock bottom prices, especially when there is a glut in the market. Our farmers farm when they have rainfall and during periods of drought they are unable to grow anything. Although this project started with two Greenhouses, with proper management another 8 units will be added eventually. The initial two units were leased to two farmers. As funds become available through grants or income earned, units will be added. Each operator of a greenhouse unit functions as a small business and was given a startup grant in the form of equipment, seedlings, fertilizer and pesticides. There is a limit of 4 years occupancy for all operators, thereafter the unit will be rented to another start-up business and the cycle will be repeated thereafter. This project is a catalyst for enhancing community relationship, poverty alleviation, adaptation to climate changes and promotion of community development.

Aim of the Venture:

The Dawkins Greenhouse Project is a community facility which is aimed at providing the opportunity for residents to operate their own business in order to generate income as well as to enhance their capacity through learning the techniques of greenhouse farming and business management.

  • To have a total of 8 greenhouse units being operated by 16 business partners.
  • To create wealth and employment for community members.
  • To have the facility recognized by vegetable buyers as a reliable source of quality produce.

Our Vision:

The Dawkins Greenhouse Project will become a recognized and sustainable venture providing entrepreneurial opportunities for local farmers while serving as a means of building the capacity of said farmers in various agricultural and business related techniques.

Our Mission:

The Mission of the Dawkins Greenhouse Project is to serve the community of Dawkins by alleviating poverty and creating sustainable income through the promotion and implementation of greenhouse farming technology in the interest of creating sustainable development, utilizing environmentally friendly techniques and to be a model for economic empowerment through community partnerships.
