The Social Development Commission (SDC), through its Participatory Governance Programme, recently hosted the inaugural Portland Development Area Committees (DAC) Retreat under the theme, “Connect, Grow, Thrive: Building Stronger Communities Together.” Held at Barhanna Vista Lodge in Port Antonio, the event brought together 83 participants from various development areas for an evening of reflection, motivation, and collective vision.

Deputy Executive Director of the SDC, Omar Frith, delivered the keynote address, titled “Building Resilient Communities through Collective Action.” Frith emphasized the importance of active civic engagement, stating, “Democracy is more than just the act of voting; it requires active participation in shaping our communities. The SDC’s, Participatory Governance Framework, exemplifies democracy in action, and each of you is an ambassador of this process. Our society demands that leaders be accountable, transparent, and morally grounded, and it is our responsibility to uphold these values.”
